Congratulations, Kaimuki MS Symphonic Winds students!!! Bravo on a wonderful performance at the 2019 Music for All National Festival! You made us proud in representing Kaimuki Middle School, our community, and the State of Hawaii!!!

I am extremely proud of you all!!! Thank you for your dedication and resilience through all the rehearsals!

As a reward for your hard work, there will be no rehearsal on Monday, 3/25. We will resume rehearsals on Wednesday, 3/27.

Please take the time to thank your parents, chaperones, Mr. Fernandes, Mrs. Titcomb, and our awesome Directors: Mr. Fujio, Mr. Hayakawa, and Ms. Ledesma, for their support! This incredible experience would not have been possible without their support!

Kaimuki Middle Symphonic Winds featured on HawaiiNewsNow

Hi all,

We hope that your Sunday evening is going well. In case you missed it, the Kaimuki Symphonic Winds (KSW) group were featured on HawaiiNewsNow this past Friday night. Our group of students will be the first middle school from Hawaii to perform at the Music For All Festival in Indianapolis. Way to go teachers and students! Make us proud!

Picture Taking this week

Hi KMS Music Family,

This is a reminder that picture taking for the music department will take place this week.

  • Chorus, Ukulele, and Advanced Strings will take place at 2:25PM this afternoon in the cafeteria
  • Concert Bands (MFA/KSW/KCB) will take place tomorrow 1/29/19 at 2:25PM in the cafeteria
  • Beginning Band/Beginning Strings will be held Wednesday 1/30/19 at 2:25PM in the cafeteria.

Please be sure your child brings the appropriate attire to school and we thank you in advance for your patience as picture taking can sometimes extend up to or past 4:00PM.

Winter Concert 2018 Wrap-Up

Thank you all again for making these past 2 nights a memorable one! We appreciate your support (volunteering/donations/patience/etc.) for the KMS Music Program. 

We hope that you and your families enjoyed yourselves with the talent, heart, and commitment that the students and teachers have put on display over the course of 2 concerts.  It will only get better as the year progresses!

Please have a safe and wonderful holiday season and we look forward to seeing you all again at the Aloha Concert 2018 (tentatively scheduled for May 8th and 9th)!

We’d first like to thank the parents, teachers, students, and volunteers who made last night’s Winter Concert #1 a rousing success.  Thank you for your kind words, generous donations, and assistance with the KMS Music Program! Tonight’s program will feature the following:

Beginning Band (6:00pm)
Featuring a mix of concert and seasonal favorites. Beginning band will perform concert standards such as Leo Arnaud’s Olympic fanfare Bugler’s Dream and the Ode To Joy theme from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. The band will also play Christmas favorites like Up on a Housetop and Jolly Old St. Nicholas. The program is rounded out with the Mickey Mouse March and two concert works by Paul Lavender.

Kaimuki Concert Band (6:45pm)
Featuring the concert band music of James Swearingen and Robert Sheldon. The Kaimuki Concert Band will also play a medley of seasonal favorites in A Winter Celebration and a suite of music from the Disney Animated Feature Pocahontas. KCB finishes featuring trumpet, saxophone, and oboe soloists in SMAP’s Sekai Ni Hitotsu Dake No Hana.

Kaimuki Symphonic Winds (7:30pm)
Featuring the concert music of Steven Reineke and Gustav Holst. KSW welcomes retired Wilson Elementary Band Director Kazu Sunabe to guest conduct Selections from the Greatest Showman. KMS Chorus teacher Kendal Ledesma will also guest conduct. The program also includes the Carpenters classic Merry Christmas Darling and Do You Hear What I Hear? J-Pop group SMAP’s Sekai Ni Hitotsu Dake No Hana rounds out the program.

One more thing, there will be a KMS 8th Grade Snack Tent located right outside of the auditorium tonight. Prices are listed above.

Winter Concert #1 is tonight!

Just a friendly reminder that tonight is Winter Concert #1 (Kaimuki High School Auditorium at 6:00PM) and will feature the following:

Chorus (6:00pm)
Featuring White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes as covered by the Pentatonix; Humble and Kind, made popular by Tim McGraw; and Believer by Imagine Dragons. More traditional fare include My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music and the French-Canadian folk song J’entends Le Moulin.

Beginning Ukulele (6:40pm)
Featuring Ka’au Crater Boys’ Tropical Hawaiian Day, One Day by Matisyahu, and music from Kolohe Kai. Also including more traditional fare like Beethoven’s Ode to Joy and Mele Kalikimaka.

Intermediate Ukulele (7:20pm)
Featuring classic rock like The Cascades’ Rhythm of the Rain and more modern pop like Mraz’s I’m Yours. Also, Hawaiian tunes old and new like Na Makani Eha and Honey Baby. Finally, IU closes with Maui, Hawaiian Supa Man and a medley of Christmas songs.

Beginning Strings (8:05pm)
Featuring a mix of classical, pop, and Christmas favorites. Beginning Strings will perform Emile Waldteufel’s Skater’s Waltz and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5. The Christmas favorite Jolly Old St. Nicholas is paired with Jingle Bells.

Advanced Strings (8:45pm)
Featuring concert works by Sean O’Loughlin and David Shaffer. Seventh grader Chaemin Lee is featured on piano in Silvestri’s Believe from the movie The Polar Express. Holiday favorites include Dance of the Tumblers from Rimsky-Korsakov’s ballet The Snow Maiden. Rounding out the program is Respighi’s Ancient Aires and Dances. 

Concert Orchestra (9:15pm)
Concert Orchestra combines the members of Advanced Strings with the very best players of Kaimuki Symphonic Winds to form a full symphony orchestra. The group will perform Bruno Mars’ breakout single Just The Way You Are, the well-known Rossini Overture to The Barber of Seville, and the Music Department’s theme song Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana.

There will be programs at the front door and donations are kindly accepted! We hope to see you there!

KSW Ala Moana Winter Concert

Last night, the Kaimuki Symphonic Winds (KSW) put on a wonderful, holiday-themed performance for the parents, supporters, and shoppers at Ala Moana centerstage.  The show lasted 45 minutes and 7 pieces were performed, including selections from The Greatest Showman and Merry Christmas Darling.   Two guest conductors Ms. Ledesma and Mr. Sunabe also were a part of last night’s program.

We’d like to thank KMS teachers, former KMS students, volunteers, and parents for coming out to support the concert!  Also a big MAHALO to those who assisted with setup, breakdown, and chaperoning the students!

We look forward to Winter concert #1 tonight followed by Winter concert #2 on Thursday!  Thank you!
