Winter Concert #1 is tonight!

Just a friendly reminder that tonight is Winter Concert #1 (Kaimuki High School Auditorium at 6:00PM) and will feature the following:

Chorus (6:00pm)
Featuring White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes as covered by the Pentatonix; Humble and Kind, made popular by Tim McGraw; and Believer by Imagine Dragons. More traditional fare include My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music and the French-Canadian folk song J’entends Le Moulin.

Beginning Ukulele (6:40pm)
Featuring Ka’au Crater Boys’ Tropical Hawaiian Day, One Day by Matisyahu, and music from Kolohe Kai. Also including more traditional fare like Beethoven’s Ode to Joy and Mele Kalikimaka.

Intermediate Ukulele (7:20pm)
Featuring classic rock like The Cascades’ Rhythm of the Rain and more modern pop like Mraz’s I’m Yours. Also, Hawaiian tunes old and new like Na Makani Eha and Honey Baby. Finally, IU closes with Maui, Hawaiian Supa Man and a medley of Christmas songs.

Beginning Strings (8:05pm)
Featuring a mix of classical, pop, and Christmas favorites. Beginning Strings will perform Emile Waldteufel’s Skater’s Waltz and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5. The Christmas favorite Jolly Old St. Nicholas is paired with Jingle Bells.

Advanced Strings (8:45pm)
Featuring concert works by Sean O’Loughlin and David Shaffer. Seventh grader Chaemin Lee is featured on piano in Silvestri’s Believe from the movie The Polar Express. Holiday favorites include Dance of the Tumblers from Rimsky-Korsakov’s ballet The Snow Maiden. Rounding out the program is Respighi’s Ancient Aires and Dances. 

Concert Orchestra (9:15pm)
Concert Orchestra combines the members of Advanced Strings with the very best players of Kaimuki Symphonic Winds to form a full symphony orchestra. The group will perform Bruno Mars’ breakout single Just The Way You Are, the well-known Rossini Overture to The Barber of Seville, and the Music Department’s theme song Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana.

There will be programs at the front door and donations are kindly accepted! We hope to see you there!

KSW Additional After-School Rehearsals, MFA dress code, and MFA Picture Taking

Hi all,

We hope that you are enjoying your break!  Here are some news items for Kaimuki Symphonic Winds (KSW) students:

1. There have been a few new KSW after-school rehearsals that have been scheduled to prepare for the winter concert and the Music For All (MFA) Festival during Spring Break.  You can view the latest updates in the calendar.

2. The MFA dress code will be as follows:

  • Long black dress pants (no jeans, no corduroy, no leggings, no visible design)
  • Black belt if needed with simple silver or black buckle
  • Completely black dress shoes
  • Completely long black dress socks (no short socks)
  • Long sleeve solid white dress shirt (no print, no shiny material, no off white color)
  • Blue KSW MFA necktie (Students will be provided a form to purchase the ties when they return to school from Fall Break)
  • MFA Group Photo will be taken on Oct. 26th and students NEED to have their attire by that date

3. Below are two pictures of students who performed at Carnegie Hall and should give you an idea of how their attire should look.  The third picture is one of the KSW band along with members of the City Council who honored Kaimuki Middle for being the first middle school band to perform in Carnegie!

Welcome to the start of another great school year!

Mr. Fujio, Ms. Ledesma, Mrs. Ochi-Onishi, and Mr. Hayakawa are excited to start off this new school year with the students!
